Haldago Bay Items Are Glazed. Is Painting The Same As Glazing?
NO! Glazes are kiln fired (almost 2,000 degrees.) and used for foodsafe and outdoor pieces. Paints are paints, found in a bottle in stores, such as Folk Art, Craft Smart, Apple Barrel, etc. They are not fired. For detailed pieces which do not require weatherproofing (such as decorative plates, acrylics can be used as the color you paint IS the color. Glazes, when applied, can be vastly different than the fired results.
How Well Do Glazes Hold Up In The Weather?
Glazes are kiln fired at almost 2,000 degrees. If it gets THAT hot in Florida, we're leaving. However, COLD weather is not recommended for glazed pieces, because the heating/shrinking might cause the glaze to crack. We bring in our pieces if it gets below 38 degrees to be on the safe side.
Any Suggestions On Painting Bisque With Acrylics?
With a damp sponge (no detergent) or washcloth, wipe down the bisque to remove firing "dust." Use acrylic paint (found in our store, Michaels, Walmart) and when painting, pay attention to the edges of your brush stroke. It will "ridge" if you load the brush with too much paint. Acrylics are fun because if you avoid ridging, you can easily paint over areas you wish to change. Acrylics are opague. Let areas dry before you paint next to them, and leave the smallest areas to do last.
Are You Available To Give Painting Assistance?
Cathie's artwork has appeared in national magazines and she is happy to provide assistance in the basics of blending colors if you're trying to paint pottery or canvas! Example: how to mix blues and purples for spectacular white animals, topped with tints of oranges and pinks for a beautiful glow. You'll never think of white as "boring" again. Polar bears rock!
